8 Considerations when planning your PR

When thinking about publicity for your business, there are numerous considerations. In fact, it can become a little daunting and if you’re not careful, you can become overwhelmed… then nothing happens. Or you try to do everything and keep your fingers crossed something will pay off.

Whichever way you look at it, we are inundated with information these days—and never has it been more important to have a solid vision for what you’re trying to achieve and clarity as to how you’ll get there.

Here are a few key points that I feel crucial when planning any PR program

  1. Calendar: nothing can beat having a calendar of activity. You can physically map your next few weeks or months and see what you have coming up, prepare for busy times and use the quieter periods effectively.
  2. Foresight: a little bit goes a long way. Are there events or activities coming up that you can prepare for well in advance? Or maybe, be prepared for should they eventuate?
  3. Clarity: advance planning allows for clarity in your thinking. It gives you space to evaluate opportunities that are worth participating in…or not.
  4. Don’t be reactionary: often opportunities that are grasped at are poorly executed and invariably not worthwhile.
  5. Vision: if you have to move quickly for an opportunity remember to ask yourself, “Does this fit with my vision?” Remain clear on what your overall vision is and if this fits the bill, then go for it. If not, don’t.
  6. What are you trying to achieve? Ensure you are clear about what you’re trying to achieve with your publicity and that each activity fits with your overall objective.
  7. Events: put all the key events for your business into your calendar so you see can what’s coming up and prepare in advance.
  8. Stakeholder / partner events: Know when you partner or stakeholders’ activities are, as there might be opportunities for you to do something with them.
